Jonesborough is a charming Tennessee town, founded in 1779 before Tennessee was officially a state.  It is located in eastern Tennessee’s Washington County near the tri-cities area of Johnson City, Kingsport, and Bristol.  Jonesborough has just under 6,000 residents and is about 4.3 square miles.

The town was named after a North Carolina legislator, Willie Jones, before Tennessee existed independently and the area was still part of Jones’ home state.  The town was later made capital of the state of Franklin, but this was short-lived because the federal government never officially recognized Franklin as a state.  North Carolina reclaimed Jonesborough until the state of Tennessee was admitted into the Union in 1796.

President Andrew Jackson first obtained his license to practice law in Jonesborough before moving to Nashville to practice law, and later becoming president.  Later in the 1800’s during the Civil War, Jonesborough and much of eastern Tennessee along with North Carolina was divided by the war between states.  Even before the war, Jonesborough was a center for abolitionists and it was here that the paper the Emancipator was printed and distributed.  The paper focused on the abolition of slaves and was printed until the death of its creator.

Another interesting piece of Jonesborough’s history is its status as the storytelling capital of the world.  For over thirty years, Jonesborough has been the location for the National Storytelling Festival.  The town is home to the International Storytelling Center Campus, which serves as a meeting place for storytellers and their audiences.

Present day Jonesborough is a beautiful historic town, whose buildings and historical artifacts have been preserved and cherished for residents and visitors to enjoy.  The scenic Main Street is lined with architecture dating back hundreds of years, all of which has been kept in pristine condition with pride.  If you are considering an apartment in Jonesborough, keep in mind it is a very friendly and walkable town, making it ideal for apartment life.
