International Storytelling Center

 

Located right across the street from the courthouse, The International Storytelling Center is a beloved fixture in Jonesborough.  The center features live storytelling from May through December of each year, as well as a welcome center for visitors, exhibits on storytelling history, and a gift shop.  The Storytelling Center is affiliated with the National Storytelling Festival, which is hosted each year in Jonesborough.  The Festival includes many different kinds of events which include musical acts and various storytelling traditions, both old and new.

National Storytelling Festival

 

The National Storytelling Festival began in Jonesborough 30 years ago and became so popular that the International Storytelling Center was built as its home in 2002.  The festival is an annual occurrence, happening each year in the fall and features a range of events relating to the grand tradition of storytelling.  Ghost stories, musical performances, and midnight cabarets make the list of events which sets this festival apart as a unique and fun experience.  

 

 


 

Wetlands Water Park

 

The Wetlands Water Park is a state owned and operated water park for all ages.  There are plenty of things to do for the whole family at Wetlands.  The park has multiple slides, ranging in length up to 200 feet, a lazy river, tumble buckets, and water bubblers.  Wetlands is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day each year.

Jonesborough/Washington County History Museum / Chester Inn museum

 

The Museum located on Jonesborough’s Main Street houses exhibits detailing the city’s over 300 year old history.  It is housed in the Chester Inn, which is the oldest commercial building in town.  Photographs and artifacts from Jonesborough’s extensive history help bring the past to life for visitors of all ages.

Historic Jonesborough Ghost Walks

 

Jonesborough’s lengthy history makes the town all the more likely to be suspected of being haunted.  Appalachian Ghost Walks takes visitors through the city’s historic streets where many buildings still standing were erected before 1850.  Guides recount eerie sightings and unexplained happenings in and around these antiquated sites.

Jonesborough Visitors Center

 

A great place to start in Jonesborough is at the Visitors Center where you can become acquainted with the town’s history and what it has to offer today.  The center includes a gift shop, information center with maps and brochures, and is the location which residents and visitors can reserve a gazebo, auditorium, or community room to rent for special occasions.

QuiltFest

 

Quilting, an Appalachian pastime, is celebrated in Jonesborough with Quiltfest each year in July.  The festival is a three day long celebration of all things quilting related.  The festival has classes and demonstrations as well as interesting quilting artifacts and pieces from long ago.  

 

 



 

The Courthouse

 

Washington County The Washington County Courthouse was originally built in 1779, but the building that stands in its place today was built in 1913.  The county was formed in 1777 and became part of Tennessee 19 years later.  This is commemorated by a monument in front of the present-day courthouse.

Oak Hill School

 

This historic schoolhouse from 1886 was part of the first attempt to provide state-funded education to those in Tennessee.  The schoolhouse was moved from its original location to the heart of Jonesborough so it could be preserved as a part of the town’s history and easily accessed by visitors.  School aged children can spend a day in the one room schoolhouse and experience public education like children in the late nineteenth century.

Historic Jonesborough Dance Society

 

The Historic Jonesborough Dance Society is a non-profit community organization which holds dances for the public year-round.  The society’s goal is to encourage education and appreciation of dancing and music.  Each dance has live music and focuses on styles of dancing native to eastern Tennessee.
